The Local SEO Stats That Actually Move Rankings

July 27, 2026 · local SEO · statistics · rankings

I keep a sourced dataset of local SEO statistics — every number carries its original study, a link to verify it, and the year it was published. There are dozens in there. Most of them are true and almost none of them should change what you do next. So here's the useful cut: the handful that are actually load-bearing for a service business's next ninety days, and why they're the ones I'd act on.

The two ranking factors that decide almost everything

Whitespark and BrightLocal's 2025 Local Search Ranking Factors work names the top lever for each of the two contests you're actually in. For the map pack — the three-business box — the number-one factor is your primary Google Business Profile category, ahead of even proximity and business-name keywords. For classic organic results, the number-one factor is having a dedicated page for each service, then geographic relevance and link authority.

Read those together and your whole to-do list falls out. If you want the pack: get your Profile's primary category exactly right, because a sloppy category choice quietly caps everything else. If you want organic: stop cramming your services onto one page and give each real service its own. Two stats, two concrete instructions. That's what load-bearing means — the number tells you what to do Monday.

Reviews are the tiebreaker, and recency is the trap

The review data from BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey is where most businesses lose without knowing it. 97% of consumers read reviews. 68% won't touch a business under four stars. 47% skip businesses with fewer than 20 reviews. Those are the table stakes — meet them or you're eliminated before the comparison starts.

But the one that actually reorders your priorities is this: 74% of consumers only give weight to reviews written in the last three months. That single finding kills the "hit 4.9 years ago, all set" mindset. A dormant review wall reads as a dormant business. Recency isn't a nice-to-have on top of a good rating — it's a separate requirement, and it means reviews are a system you run continuously, not a milestone you hit once.

The one that reframes the whole game

Then there's the newest and most disorienting number: 45% of consumers now use ChatGPT or another AI tool for local recommendations, up from about 6% a year earlier — and per SOCi's data, it's roughly 30× harder to surface in an AI recommendation than to rank in Google's local results, with under half of Google's local leaders even appearing in the AI answers. Ranking on Google no longer guarantees you exist in the answer a customer actually reads.

That's the shift worth internalizing this quarter, not next year. Everything else on this list — category, service pages, fresh reviews, consistent facts — is also what makes you legible to the AI. The homework doesn't change; the grader multiplied. The full sourced dataset has the rest, each stat with its source so you can check my work.
